Senior citizens in Sweden took daily Coenzyme Q10 and selenium supplements. After four years, they had improved heart function, reduced rates of heart disease mortality, and improved health-related quality of life. This meant more quality time together with their families.
Coenzyme Q10 supplements in the ubiquinone form have a proven track record in clinical studies of heart disease. The ubiquinone form increases survival and reduces symptoms in heart failure. It reduces the risk of cardiovascular death. There is no similar evidence for ubiquinol.
Adding CoQ10 supplementation to conventional medication for heart failure is very likely to have a positive effect on survival, on quality of life, on the risk of hospitalization, on physical function, and on the cost-effectiveness of treatment according to a recent analysis.
Coenzyme Q10 and selenium supplementation of senior citizens significantly reduces systemic oxidative stress and inflammation and significantly reduces the risk of death from heart disease. The study dosage was 200 mg Coenzyme Q10 and 200 mcg selenium daily for 48 months.
